The Future of Microsoft

I expressed my views about Microsoft Windows Vista. What dose Microsoft have to do in order to break the idea that they are out of touch; or are that truly out of touch with what the people want and need. I have said this in the past Microsoft needs to focus more on the consumer while keeping their business customers happy as well, but separate. I have been told repeatedly that Windows is good for business users while Mac OS X is perfect for the home user. As a designer, I know the benefits of using a Mac, but what about the uses of windows. I have proposed in the past, and recently heard it suggested again, Microsoft should split up. In doing so, they could focus more on a home user by “turning up” the GUI for a better user experience, while maintaining performance. On the other hand, they could release a second version of Windows made for the business user. I do not mean just giving it a new name like enterprise edition. Businesses do not want Fisher Price looking GUI, and they defiantly do not want aero glass, these are things that the home user wants. Give the business user a Windows 2000 experience and they are content! Therefore, for Microsoft to succeed in the future, I think that the need to brake apart to meet the needs and desires of the individual customers rather then jam it into a all-in-on package that people don’t like.

Edit: Microsoft has announced that Windows 7 will ship in January, 2010. They will probably change the date before then of course.

Give Vista a Brake

I would like to take this moment to set the record straight about Windows Vista. This is a sour spot for Microsoft because all you hear about is the bad. Granted there are a few hardware, software and driver issues, but once you get past them, Vista is quite good. I built a top of the line computer a few years back, and of course, it is no longer up to par. When Vista was available, I installed it on this computer and was disappointed. More recently, I purchased a new desktop, and laptop, both of which run Vista, and with a new look at it, I think my judgment was premature. With SP1 out now, Vista is much better and more reliable. Some will say Vista is more reliable than XP, and I think that argument can be made. One thing is for sure, Vista is vastly more secure than its predecessors are. I do not think Vista is a substitute for Mac OS X, but for the average user it is not bad. I am tired of people hounding on Vista give it a chance. With time, many will be using it and they will find that Vista actually did deliver a better user experience, more reliability and improved security.

Update: the truth about vista can be found at the mojave experiment website.

Wh t th h ck (what the heck)

I went the the theater last weekend and saw the new Indiana Jones movie. Have to say it was excellent until the last 5 min. (That is besides the point) I didn’t notice but apparently Paramount clipped audio from the movie to discourage pirating it. “What the heck” I am just trying to legitimately watch a movie and this is how I am repaid? I made the comment before and I will make it again… TOO MUCH COPYRIGHT! :(
